Part 9: Rising Storm

Brianey/ Your Point of View

You glanced awkwardly at your parents, who were glancing at each other and then to you. You become increasingly uncomfortable as the others awaited an answer. What's the matter with them? He only asked a question... besides... it ain't a big deal- they met in-

"Well we met 20 years ago... our ...erm." You watched your mom shifting her gaze nervously and you were becoming very concerned.

"Parents introduced us didn't they Jules?" Your eyes widened.

They told me they met in a club... dad started a fight and mom threw him out... why are they saying-? You gawped at them perplexed, you saw Shuichi glance at you curiously as he nodded to your mother.

"I see, so you've been married for?"

"Nineteen years, next year will be our China wedding anniversary" Your mom said happily while looking at your dad. You however were not smiling; you were suspicious and a bit angry. Why did she lie? ...what has she got to hide? You thought, chaffed. Seeing Hiei glance your way you averted your gaze down into your lap and stood.

"I'm not feeling well... goin' for a walk." Not waiting for any response you fled quickly and silently from the table, ignoring all eyes which followed you out the door. You grabbed your leather biker jacket and tugged it on, shutting the front door behind you.

The cool air hit your face making you become more alert, sighing in annoyance you trudged down the street heading for the area you and Hiei trained. You had come to like it a lot there, with the pleasant view of the village over looking the lush green of the hillside and the small stream that was The River Dove that flowed into The River Trent.

As you arrived you looked around and were glad to see there were no people around, you made your way to the base of a willow tree and sat between its roots.

What the hell is goin' on. My parents told me they met in a club... and they just said they didn't. Why are they lying? More to the point they're lying to my friends! Do they not trust them? ...What's going on!  You continued to search for answers.

Slowly but surely, the rays of the sun sank deeply below the horizon, taking the light of the day with it. In it's place darkness emerged swallowing the sky. The moon bathed the earth with silver, creating dark shadows where the street lamps were not present. Amongst this, a girl lay in the shadow of a willow, her eyes cast up in uncertainty as she tried to piece things together.

Not far away a boy walked down the grassy hill, the twilight making his hair gleamed, and his chestnut eyes were filled with concern. He vaulted over the fence and trudged carefully down the hill stopping, he faced the girl.

Hiei's Point of View

You watched as the lead detective and Brianey look at each other. You being concealed in the leaves of the willow tree had the perfect place to eavesdrop. You observed them.

"You alright... you left pretty quickly." You heard, as Yusuke joined her amongst the roots, you saw her shrug.

"Not sure... what they told you back there was not what they told me. They said they met in a club... dad started a fight." She sounded untrusting and your eyebrow perked. She is easily swayed to suspicion... that explains why she did not open up to us. Her parents are obviously not good at keeping to one story either... this could prove useful. You noted.

"Oh... so they lied? Damn that bites." You rolled your eyes at the detective's grammar, but continued to listen though you were growing tired.

"Yeah I guess they did... but what if that's not the only thing they lied about."

Yusuke's Point of View

She's very clever... man no wonder I liked her from the off. She's got everything - attitude, knows how to look after herself and she even knows when something not right... I really hate not telling her anything. Stupid baby.

"What do ya mean Bri? I mean maybe they just forgot?"

"Would you forget how you met your girlfriend or wife?" She cut in quickly, looking at you with a sceptical look. You pulled a stupid grin.

"I dunno depends on if she was cute." You replied scratching your head you laughed as she punched your arm - though it wasn't serious.  You were just fooling around, as usual. She finally stopped fake-glaring and you smiled, before frowning.

"Are you sure you're ok? You look bummed out Bri. What's matter?" You creased your eyebrows together when she doesn't reply. I've never seen her look like this... she really does look... alone? She shifted slightly resting her head on her knees, and you looked away when your heart sped up. What the hell was wrong with you?

"No... Not really I don't know why but I feel. Weird... and I'm doubting my parents as well - I mean, they're lying but there has to be a reason why they are... doesn't there?"

You averted your eyes upwards, hoping she didn't see the guilt that was locked into them. After all - you knew what they were hiding... you were helping to hide it too.

"Maybe they're just protecting you... you never know." You replied, only half of your attention on what you were saying. The other half wondered on random things, until you blinked. What the heck was that? You quickly looked back up into the dense branches of the tree, and frowned as you saw nothing. Brilliant... you're seeing things Yusuke. You mocked yourself turning back to Brianey. Seeing her looking at you; you jerked back.

"W-Why are you lookin' at me like that?"

"You zoned out didncha? ...I said that you might be right... Yus' why are you blushing?" You looked away quickly. You could feel her still looking at you and you closed your eyes. Please... stop looking at me. I don't know why I am blushing. Dammit!  You look back at her and lean in.

You're lips connected.

Brianey/Your Point of View

You tensed up instantly, shock etched into your stormy grey eyes. What the hell was he doing to you? Why is... he kissing me? Wait why they hell am I letting him kiss me? This makes no sense! You floundered, however your body completely ignored you as your hands moved, as if on auto-pilot, around his neck - your heart was pounding out a fast beat and your stomach tingled as if in pure heaven. You however were highly baffled by your actions.

This feels...nice? You contemplate as you felt Yusuke move closer to you, deepening the kiss considerably. You allowed him to wrap his arms around your middle before pulling away, both of you the same colour as cherries and staring embarrassed at the floor. Your breathing was slightly erratic.

"Um... what was that for Yus'?" you murmured, you heard him make a small muffled 'um' before you both stared at each other.

"I dunno... because I like you?" Your eyebrows shot up. What? You heard sudden movement from above you and your head snapped to the tree, however you saw nothing there. Convinced it was probably a small animal you focused back to Yusuke and nodded.

"Right... ok. I think I like you to Yus'" You mumbled; you could see him smiling from the corner of your eye but ignored it as you got up. Dusting yourself off you held your hand out to the boy who took it and joined you.

You both smiled at each other once more before heading back to your house - where the get together was still in full swing, the only person not having a good time was currently locked in his room.

Hiei's Point of View

What the hell does that baka think he is doing? She's our assignment and he just decides he's going to play make out! He better watch out when he comes home... as for Brianey... well- You paused in your train of thought at that. You couldn't really do anything to her - even if you wanted to. Letting an annoyed and infuriating sigh passed your parted lips, you closed your slightly tired eyes and put a hand to your forehead. This mission is becoming more and more complicated with each passing second. If it continues were going to... complicate matters to the point of possible failure. I cannot allow that to happen. I never fail at anything - I don't plan on doing so any time soon either. Yusuke is going to have to be told. You stared up and out of your double window, the tree in the garden swayed and the grass rippled to the will of the wind.

You once again sat on your windowsill and open the window a crack to listen to the others with Brianey's parents.

Segments of the conversation float to your ears as you sat there; you begin to feel slightly left out. Hn... why do I even bother to care about anything. Everything leaves me alone eventually anyway... Even she did. You frowned sadly as you remain listening. You could hear Botan, Kayko and Yuki laughing at a joke Ryan - Brianey's father, you corrected quickly, made and you frown more.

Damn mission.

Your/ Brianey's Point of View

Your feet scuffed against the hard pavement as you and Yusuke walked, you were not far away from the house again now and you were glad; you were getting tired. Mixed thoughts ran through your head as you progressed, you gazed to Yusuke frequently, becoming confused.

Why? Why did he kiss you?. He said he liked you and you have to admit to having a certain attraction to him too - but why did you kiss? You creased your brow together your eyes fixed almost subconsciously on the floor in front of you as you moved.

Broken this fragile thing now... And I can't I ca-

"Hello? ...Oh no were fine I found her. Yeah coming back now, don't worry. Bye" You watched Yusuke for a moment, awaiting an answer as he slipped his mobile back into his pocket, however you stopped as you found something on the floor.

"Yusuke ya dropped something." You mumbled as you stoop down grasping the small necklace into your hands and straightening up. You surveyed it.

"Wow, this thing's really nice. I don't think I've ever seen a wolf-pentagram necklace before... where did ya get it?"  You asked as you looked to him and then the necklace in your hand.

You never saw the nervous and worried look Yusuke had.

"Erm. I... err... I found it? Yeah it was just... lying around on the street so I picked it up." You focused on him and nodded.

"Cool... well it's more a girls necklace. I'll 'ave it if ya don't mind Yus'?"

Floundering he moved to grab it; but you moved your hand, putting it around your neck and fastening the latch, before he could. You smiled at him. "Whaddya think?"

"It looks good - but I was going to take to lost and found Bri." You threw him a sceptical glance.

"Yeah right, sure ya were - I know you better than that Yus. Could I- ...ugh." You clutched your head with your left hand as you become nauseated, waves rippling through your body. You continued to groan as it spread throughout your body making you unbalanced.

You stumble over.

"Brianey? What's the matter you... gone dizzy again?" You heard Yusuke's voice not to far away and you proceed to nod your head but put a hand to your mouth as a sick feeling bubbled in your stomach. Oh god. What's wrong with me? I can't move and I ...feel so sick. Concern washed through your system, however, you screamed as the concern was followed by a sharp and excruciating pain.

You curled up holding your ribs. You could feel Yusuke shaking you; but that made the pain worse you cried out.

"What the hell is wrong with her! Hiei... you gotta come and help me!"

"I'm busy detective what's the problem?"

"Brianey found the necklace. I had it in my pocket and she put it on. Now she keeps screaming! I'm not far from the house can you please come help me? The neighbours are going to come out soon!"

"I'll be there in a moment. Try to move her somewhere she won't cause a disturbance."

You heard everything, inside your head and became very scared. The pain had relocated to your head and the back of your spine, it large, pulsating painful throbs. Fire washed through your veins making you feel like you'd simply shrivel up into ashes; and you could feel wetness on your cheeks - you were crying. Please help me... this hurts like fuck! You continually begged as you felt yourself leave the ground.

Voices over head concluded that Yusuke was talking to someone and sudden screaming came to your ears.

"Brianey!" You closed your eyes tightly the sound was too loud for you, piercing your ears. Shocking a small part of your subconscious noted that it was you making the sound.

Just let me die; let me die please, anything but this pain. You pleaded. You felt like your head would just implode leaving nothing but a red smear on the floor. Continuing to cry out in pain you felt someone shaking you. You curled up more.

Stop it -IT HURTS STOP SHAKING ME! You whimpered before screaming as you felt the skin at the bottom of your back and the top of your head rip away from the skull completely. Something started to grow.

Botan's Point of View

You and Kayko stand motionless; your back against the wall as Yusuke and Hiei barge into the house a screaming, frantic, Brianey curled into Yusuke chest. The others rushed to her and you watch as her dad blazed at the rest of you.

"Why is she wearing that!" His eyes were a deep malevolent orchid. Her mother was shaking her child, calling her name. Kurama and Kazuma were also standing stock still, appearing to be at a loss for an explanation.

"Well? I want a damn answer!" Ryan demanded. Hiei turned to him.

"We found it... We were sent here to watch your daughter. Koenma's orders." You closed your eyes. Hiei! You weren't supposed to tell them!

Opening your fuchsia eyes once more you quickly go to Jules taking her hands in your own.

"Please... shaking her will not help. We have to get to her Koenma!" She was looking at you with a mix of fright and anger. However Ryan caught your attention.

"Why are you taking us to him? Wait... you're his spirit detectives aren't you? How did you get the necklace though? We lock-"

"Look... we don't have time for this Brianey needs help now! Please. Just save the questions for later!" Yusuke was shouting from his position next to Brianey he seemed to be more shaken than the rest of you. The fact that Brianey now had new ears and a tail member growing from her back and head; did not really help to calm everyone down, either.

"Koenma... problem could you make us a portal please?" Kurama was on the communicator and you were trying to calm Mrs. Walker down. Why now? Koenma's going to kill us! You thought desperately as a portal appeared.  You manoeuvred the distraught woman through with her seething husband in close step before going through yourself. Praying the small ruler was in a good mood...
